COUNTRYSIDE
LEARNING DAY
Southill will be hosting another Countryside Learning Day in June 2026 when 150 youngsters from local schools will learn about the sustainable management of natural resources from staff within our Farms, Woods, Game & Conservation departments.
A day of interactive learning about sustainable countryside management
We invite pupils to visit Park Farm and meet our staff to learn about maintaining biodiversity and improving sustainability. Pupils are engaged at eight ‘stands’ to engage in discussion and interactive learning aimed at broadening their knowledge and stimulating their primary senses – sight, sound, smell & touch.
Farms
The renowned in-hand farming operation at Southill has applied the principles of regenerative agriculture for over a decade and is recognised as a leading example of this innovative approach where soil health and margin are valued over maximising output. Pupils learn about our alternative approach to food production and natural resource management. They will see large machinery, learn about different food crops, varying forms of fertiliser and smell the farmyard atmosphere.
Game/Habitat
The game and habitat department manage native biodiversity, protecting declining species. At Southill, we are proud of our wealth of fungi, bugs, bats & raptors. Pupils meet our game keeper and deer stalker and learn about managing the delicate balance of native species to achieve sustainable biodiversity and bioabundance. They see the tools of their trades and understand what the sounds that break the countryside silence mean. They learn which introduced species are upsetting the natural balance.
Woods
Arranged around historic parkland, Southill has conifer and broadleaved woodlands growing timber for amenity and commercial reasons. Pupils meet our forestry team and see the tools they use for managing timber. They learn about the different types of tree and purposes of production, from everyday items in construction, to stationery and heating homes.
Environmental Sustainability
Alongside solar power and energy efficiency measures, the Estate is implementing a biodiversity improvement project which is of regional significance. Land has been taken out of arable production and dedicated to establishment of woodland, water and wildland pasture. They meet our team and learn about our social, carbon and We want pupils to be inspired to connect with their countryside, recognise the wildlife around them and respect the origin of their food.
